Our friend ‘The Cape Don’ under threat

Dear friends and fans,
The Cape Don MV, the ship currently moored at Waverton Wharf, Sydney Harbour, which has become something of a spiritual home for Youth Group over the past couple of years, is under threat. The ship is currently facing an eviction notice from NSW Maritime, a move that is unjust and would place the future of the ship’s restoration project in doubt.

Our relationship with the vessel goes back some years. We shot the film clip for our song ‘Skeleton Jar’ on and around the Cape Don, have had a number of photo shoots on board and recorded parts of our most recent record ‘The Night Is Ours’ in the ship’s engine room. In June the crew a helped us organise and stage a memorable media launch for our new record, for which we played a set on the poop deck.

The crew of the Cape Don have been incredibly welcoming to Youth Group over the past few years. We have always been inspired by their generosity as well as the passion and energy they pour in to restoring this wonderful old Lighthouse Tender. We are proud to be part of the community of locals and visitors that has developed around this wonderfully interesting and valuable part of maritime heritage, and think it is a great shame that its future has been brought into doubt. If eviction occurs, the ship will have to move to a mooring without public access and power. This would fundamentally compromise its intended role as a living museum and cut it off from the community that has invested their time and energy into its restoration.

The ship has been given short notice to move from its current moorings at Waverton. The reasons given for the eviction are that the area is not safe or secure enough to house the Don. These are reasons that have never been a problem for the last five years and, if anything, work done by the crew has made the area safer and more secure. Furthermore, NSW Maritime is cynically using the Youth Group launch as ammunition in its war. On its website it calls our launch a ‘wild party’, whereas in reality it was calm, orderly and had no noise complaints, was invitation only and was attended by members of North Sydney Council including the Mayor Genia McCaffery who gave a speech before we played.

If you want to know more about the Cape Don and its threat, please go to www.mvcapedonsociety.org.au Any support you can offer the ship and her crew would be greatly appreciated.

And if you want to see archival footage of the ship and a Stateline documentary on the ship go to www.youtube.com/mvcapedon

NEW ALBUM & INTIMATE THEATRE SHOWS ANNOUNCED

Youth Group are set to release their fourth album ‘The Night Is Ours‘ on June 28. The highly anticipated album follows on from their top ten ARIA-Award winning album ‘Casino Twilight Dogs‘.

Recorded and produced by Tim Kevin and Anthony The and mixed by Tim Whitten (Augie March, Powderfinger, 78 Saab) and Youth Group’s good friend Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), ‘The Night Is Ours’ saw Youth Group employ a less than traditional recording process.

Over a couple of months late last year, the band holed up in a near derelict 1920s mess hall on Sydney’s harbour to create the record. They turned a vacated building into a studio, and brought in all of their own gear to create an inimitable recording environment which allowed them to work at their own pace. This unusual approach helped to shape the 10 songs that make up the personality of ‘The Night Is Ours.’

The band recently launched the album to media with a brilliant showcase aboard the MV Cape Don, a boat moored on Sydney Harbour a short distance from where the album was recorded. Under a stormy sky, they left a lasting impression:

“Inspiring and memorable… Toby Martin is surely one of the best talents in this country” – Sun Herald

New Album, Free Sydney Show for Fans Beamed Worldwide

New Album set for release

Toby, Danny, Patrick and Cameron have finished putting the finishing touches to their new record, and are getting darned excited about the idea of it going out into the world for other people to hear. THE NIGHT IS OURS is scheduled for release on Ivy League records in Australia on JUNE 28th, contains ten tracks, and runs at 38 minutes long. It has been described by Cameron’s older brother Julian as “fantastic – a HUGE step up for the band” and “just packed to the rafters with amazing things to discover”. Unfortunately you’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to see if you agree with him about all this.
